June 2024 Mustard Seed - A Word from Our Pastor

5/30/2024

Greetings Siblings in Christ,
We are now in the month of June. Summer is here! The weather is hot! School is about to be out, and many of you will soon be going on vacation. Others will be migrating down to the shore for the summer. We will soon all be starting our summer adventures. My adventure this summer is the venture of homeownership. On May 10, 2024, Eileen and I purchased our first home together. It is a beautiful two-story house. It has three bedrooms and one full bath. The frontside of the house includes a covered porch that is surrounded by a garden. There is also a fenced in backyard of medium size that will be great for Luca! We are quite excited for this adventure, and it sure has been eventful so far!  We have painted the interior. I cleaned the carpets. I had to buy a lawn mower. We have slowly been moving in over the month of May.

So, you may be wondering where this house is? Well, it is in Drexel Hill, PA in Delaware County. There are various reasons why we ended up in this location. We did not necessarily only look in this area. In fact, we looked in all five of the counties in the Philadelphia Metro area. However, overall, we are happy with the location. It is closer to Eileen’s work. We have friends in the area. Then, the cherry on top is that we are five minutes away from Luca’s best friend from daycare. Unfortunately, this house is further from both Faith and Jerusalem. My commute is now 20 to 30 minutes longer depending on traffic. This will be a whole new adventure in itself for me! It probably will take me some time to adjust to this commute. I will also have to be more intentional about my time at the congregations. So, I ask you all for your patience as I begin to adjust to this new normal. I also want to reiterate that I am available. You are always welcome to email and call me. Just know that if I do not answer right away, I will get back to you at an appropriate time. I am also available to meet on Zoom or in-person. If you contact me, we can set up a time and place that works best for all parties.

As your pastor, I am here to be present with you all in the best way that I can. As an ordained minister, I have been charged with many tasks. I am called to preach the Word and administer the sacrament. I am to teach and to conduct worship. However, my favorite charge is to be a minister to you! I do all of these things in service of my God and my savior Jesus Christ. In my house, next to the door, there is a hand painted wood sign from Guatemala that echoes the words of the prophet Joshua which state, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Jsh 24:15). So, that is what I and my family will continue to do! No matter where I am or where I live I will serve the Lord my God.

So, in service of our Lord, I am glad to be sharing this adventure and the many more to come with you. I give God thanks for you all, and I thank you all for your continuous prayers and support. God bless you all and I hope you all have a great summer.

Peace and Blessings,
   Pastor Ethan Doan

Do you shop at Giant?
If you do, you can buy Giant gift cards from the church.  A $50 card costs you $50.  How does the church make money?  Well, when Faith purchases $1,000 worth of cards from Giant, they only charge us $950 (a 5% discount.)  So, when we sell those cards to you, the church makes $50.  It adds up…

Hatfield Flowers and Gifts (215) 822-1530) provides Faith with two lovely flower arrangements for our sanctuary each Sunday.
You can sign up to sponsor flowers, bulletins or a food basket.  The flowers are $35, the bulletins are $10 and the food basket is $25.
You can dedicate any one of these things to someone special, to celebrate a birthday or in memory of a loved one. You may take the flowers home, or they will be given to an ill or homebound member.  The $10 for the bulletins is to help cover the cost of making the bulletins and the $25 for the food basket is money donated to “Manna on Main Street” to help feed those in the North Penn area.
To sign up for a particular Sunday either sign up on the chart on the Foyer bulletin board or call Janet in the church office (215) 368-0240.

Summer Sunday School
Nancy Gansner, Anna Friedrich, and Gail Achilles will be available on a rotating schedule each Sunday throughout the Summer (June 2 thru Sep 1) during 9:30 am Worship Service - same length of time as our traditional Sunday school.  We will plan to do an activity/lesson with the children in our Fellowship Hall, like writing notes and/or drawing pictures to our homebound members, military personnel, and ill congregational members or even to a family member or friend who needs cheering up.   Other ideas are learning scripture with puppets, making a food creation to share at coffee hour, and helping out with our ministries when needed.  We will resume traditional Sunday School on “Rally Day” September 8, 2024, during 9:30 am Worship Service after Children’s sermon and return for the rite of Holy Communion.  Parent, grandparents and guardians, thank you for glorifying our God by bringing your children to learn His Word and His Good Works.
(Note: Older youth ages 12 to 17 are welcome to serve as Youth Volunteers at Sunday School.)

Any comments or questions, please see Gail Achilles, Christian Education Chair

A special thank you to our teachers Gail Achilles, Anna Friedrich and Nancy Gansner for their dedication and ministry to our littlest disciples.

As scripture teaches, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Monday Night Bible Study will be taking a break for the summer months and resume their next study (to be determined) on Monday, September 9, at 7 pm on zoom.

"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 (NASB)

Our Vacation Bible School theme this year will be “Scuba:  diving into friendship with God” where we’ll take kids deep into an amazing undersea adventure where they’ll experience the ever-flowing, never-ending love of God. Kids will be immersed in the Word and discover what living water is really all about!  Gail Achilles, our coordinator, is enthusiastically looking forward to this adventure.  The dates for this year are Monday through Friday, August 5-9, 2024, from 9am to 12noon.
If you are interested in helping and supporting this fun and Christian formation event for our youth, please contact Gail or the church office to volunteer to help.  Thank you, Church Family!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 1:3)

The “Golden Girls of Faith” (Golden Men are welcome too!)  will be meeting once a month for lunch, fellowship and prayer at a local restaurant.  They will meet the first Wednesday of the month which will be June 5, 2024, this month.  For more information or if you need a ride, please talk to Anna Friedrich.  All are welcome!

Lord, when did we see you...?
The purpose of the Social Ministry Team is to follow Jesus' commandment to love one another as he loved us.  To offer opportunities to our congregation to be good and faithful servants.  To share the love and truth of Jesus Christ and to offer hope to all God's children by giving of our time, our money and ourselves to our church, our community, and the world.

Social Ministry project for June.
Hebrews 6:10: “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”

Please put all items in the purple barney bin under the coat rack.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7

FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY: The Fellowship Ministry Team at Faith tries to schedule activities for members of the congregation to spend time together to strengthen their bonds outside of the traditional worship service.  We also encourage members to bring their family, friends and members of the community to these activities.  This strengthens our ties to one another and opens opportunities to meet new people.
The Fellowship activity for June 2024 is:

Annual Church Family Picnic, 11am to 2 pm,  Sunday, June 2 -Rain or Shine!
Spring Valley Park, Claremont Drive, Montgomery Township

On Sunday, June 2nd right after the 9:30am worship service we will come together at Spring Valley Park for the Annual Church Picnic.  Hot dogs, burgers and drinks are provided.  You bring the salads, side dishes and desserts to share.  Also bring a lawn chair, if you like!  Restrooms are close!
Please sign up on the sheet on the table outside of the sanctuary and come out on the 2nd to fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ!

“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to anyone who seeks help from him.” Lamentations 3:25 (GNT)

 Faith’s Transportation Initiative
If you need a ride to church on Sunday or you are interested in providing a ride to church to someone, please contact Dale Foster.
We currently receive donations of WAWA Food through the Food Donation Connection program.  We may receive anything from sizzlies, to breakfast burritos, to lunch sandwiches, to muffins, to sweet treats, to hot dogs...anything they didn’t sell the day before and have now frozen. If you are in need of some supplemental food or know of someone who is, please let either Janet Hill in the church office or Dale Foster know and we will make sure you receive some Wawa food.

"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 (NASB)

If you shop at Redner’s, please save your receipts.  Anna Friedrich turns them in and the church receives a monetary donation from Redner’s.  All you need to do is bring your receipts to church and put them in the basket outside of the Sanctuary.  Thank you to those who bring in their receipts and to Anna who does the paperwork to receive this donation!  Please note that when bringing in your receipts we need the entire receipt.  Please do not tear off the bottom. Redner’s will not accept the receipt if the bottom is torn off.
Check out the can in the Fellowship Hall to recycle aluminum cans.  Not only does it help the environment, but it will generate some cash for the church.  Beth Schoening has volunteered to empty the can periodically and take the cans to the recycling center.  So, if you have any aluminum cans at home, please bring them in and it will help the earth and Faith Church!  Thank you!  (Make sure they are aluminum though…if a magnet does not attach to it, it’s aluminum.)  Thank you to everyone who is filling the can!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

We are in need of Greeters (standing at the door and welcoming people as they come in) and Lectors (reading the lessons and psalm.)  If, you would like to volunteer or would like more information, please see Anna Friedrich.
We are also in need of Communion Assistants.  Please see Rich Hollenbach if you are interested in serving as a worship assistant.  Training will be provided.

Clothing Container Fundraising Program
Church Family, we now have a clothing donation box behind the church.  It is located near the driveway to the Pine Tree Ridge development.  The church will receive $50 per month for having the bin there.  So please clean out your closets and fill up the bin…and tell your friends and family about it too.  Thank you!
Help your community place their unwanted/gently used clothing, shoes, apparel & linens in our clothing collection containers. This saves our landfills and gives back to low-income families in need!   In return, this program raises funds for local non-profits and organizations in our communities. Currently, they help raise funds for the American Cancer Fund, Rotary International, Eden Autism, and many other local non-profits.
They do not accept: Any merchandise that has holes, rips, stains, mold or has an odor and is wet.

Technology Volunteers
We are looking for a few volunteers who are willing to learn and help with the technology behind our virtual and in-person worship services.  Each week we host our Zoom meeting for worship as well as running the video cameras and sound system in the sanctuary.  Over the past few years, we have refined this process and it’s running very smoothly now.  But it’s being managed by the same few people every week and we are looking to train others to share in this responsibility.  Please contact Rich Hollenbach, if you are interested.

June 2024 Mustard Seed - Council Notes

Council Notes                                                                                                                                                                               May 8, 2024

Council was called to order by President Rich Hollenbach.  Anne Hutnyk lead devotions.  Minutes of the April regular council meeting were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report: Council reviewed the April 2024 treasurer’s report.  At 33% of the year, Member Giving Pledged is at 40.46% (includes additional monies given by 1 member toward salary of Pastor) and Unpledged Member Giving is at 33.68% - right on track! Our current deficit is $8,168.28. None of the expenses seem out of the ordinary.
All members voted to approve the Treasurer’s Report.

President’s Report: Change is all around us, whether we like it or not. We have elected a new bishop in the SEPA Synod, we are working to find a new music director and we have kicked off the Nourishing Vocation Project here at Faith. The Long-Range Planning team has come up with some recommendations for focus which we will be reviewing tonight. We still have financial challenges, but our focus needs to be sharing the Love of Jesus to our neighbors and the world. After all, it’s Faith 5.0. We are planning another outdoor service in August with Grace, and we are also looking to do a fellowship event with Jerusalem Lutheran Church.
