December 2025 Mustard Seed - A Word from Our Pastor

11/30/2025

Greeting siblings in Christ,

We are now entering into the month of December, and we are fully into the season of Advent. This season is a time of waiting and preparing for the coming of Christ at Christmas and at the end of age. The word Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus, which literally means “coming” or “approach.” Thus, it is indeed a time of  preparation as we wait for our Lord. However, the question is “how does one wait and prepare for Jesus?”

In the time of Advent, it is easy to get distracted by the hustle and bustle of the season. It is a joyful time of the year. However, sometimes, there is just too much going on. There are Christmas parties to attend. There are gifts to be bought and cookies to be baked. There are the Christmas Eve children pageants to plan and so forth. It is easy to get lost in it all, especially because we already live in a world that is constantly busy, that is constantly on the move. A world that is distracted by new technologies, social media, and the newest internet trends. Thus, this Advent season, as a congregation, we are going to wait and prepare for the coming of our Lord by slowing down. We are going to take a breath and practice being attentive to things happening around us. We are going to watch intentionally and carefully for our God. We are going to listen attentively to voices speaking around us, to God’s and to others. Therefore, our Advent theme this year will be “Listening Attentively,” and our theme verses will be from Proverbs 4:20-22:
20 My child, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them escape from your sight;
    keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them
and healing to all their flesh.
One way that one can practice “Listening Attentively” to God is by prayerfully reading scripture.  One way to do this is through the ancient Christian contemplative practice known as Lectio Divina (Divine Reading). This is a technique of slow, contemplative praying of the scripture which enables the Bible, the Word of God, to become a means of union with God.  It begins with cultivating the ability to listen deeply, to hear “with the ear of our hearts”, listening for the still, small voice of God to speak to us personally - not loudly, but intimately.  In Lectio one reads slowly, attentively, and gently; listening to hear a word or phrase that is God’s word for us this day. These special words or verses can give a sense of encouragement, comfort, thankfulness, or conviction that often applies to present situations and can draw us closer to God. Then, in response, closer to each other and out into the world, into the mission of Christ. Here is a brief outline of how one participates in Lectio Divina.

Practicing Lectio Divina
  1. Choose a text or Scripture that you wish to pray.
  2. Place yourself in a comfortable position and allow yourself to become silent, focus on your breathing.
  3. Lectio (Read): Slowly and gently read the text.  Savor each portion of the reading, constantly listening for the “still, small voice” of a word or phrase that somehow says, “I am for you today.”
  4. Mediatio (Reflect): During the second reading, reflect on what touches you, perhaps speaking the response aloud or writing in a journal.  Allow this inner pondering, this rumination, to invite you into dialogue with God.  How is God speaking to you?
  5. Oratio (Respond): After reading the passage a third time, respond with a prayer or expression of what you have experienced.  What is God calling to you this day or this week?  Experience God using the word or phrase that has been given to you as a means of blessing, of transformation.
  6. Contemplatio (Rest): Finally, rest in silence after a fourth reading feeling God’s embrace.
So, I encourage you all to pick a small passage and try this ancient practice. Hear God’s voice and listen to it attentively. What is God calling you to do? How is God calling you to wait and prepare this Advent season? Then, go do it! You may be surprised at what God is calling you to do, but know that the Holy Spirit is with you always, to lead and to guide in all that you do. So, listen attentively for God is indeed calling. Amen.

Peace and Blessings, Pastor Ethan Doan

The Listening Life: Embracing Attentiveness in a World of Distraction   by Adam S McHugh
"Be quick to listen, slow to speak." —James 1:19
“How would our lives change if we approached every experience with the intention of listening first?
Adam McHugh places listening at the heart of our spirituality, our relationships and our mission in the world. God himself is the God who hears, and we too can learn to hear what God may be saying through creation, through Scripture, through people. By cultivating a posture of listening, we become more attentive and engaged with those around us. Listening shapes us and equips us to be more attuned to people in pain and more able to minister to those in distress.
Our lives are qualitatively different—indeed, better—when we become listeners. Heed the call to the listening life and hear what God is doing in you and the world.”
Throughout the year, our congregations will be meeting monthly to discuss the book.  For the month of December, we will be taking a break and will pick up this study in January.  More information in the January Mustard Seed.

Do you shop at Giant?
If you do, you can buy Giant gift cards from the church.  A $50 card costs you $50.  How does the church make money?  Well, when Faith purchases $1,000 worth of cards from Giant, they only charge us $950 (a 5% discount.)  So, when we sell those cards to you, the church makes $50.  It adds up…

Please keep the stamps coming!
It’s a continuing need!  Thank you for all your contributions.  It really helps.

Hatfield Flowers and Gifts ((215) 822-1530) provides Faith with two lovely flower arrangements to adorn our sanctuary.
You can sign up to sponsor flowers, bulletins or a food basket.  The flowers are $35, the bulletins are $10 and the food basket is $25.
You can dedicate any one of these things to someone special, to celebrate a birthday or in memory of a loved one. You may take the flowers home or they will be given to an ill or homebound member.  The $10 for the bulletins is to help cover the cost of making the bulletins and the $25 for the food basket is money donated to “Manna on Main Street” to help feed those in the North Penn area.
To sign up for a particular Sunday either sign up on the chart on the Foyer bulletin board or call Janet in the church office (215) 368-0240.

“Noisy Can” Offering
A noisy coin offering is a worship service collection where members donate loose change to a specific cause. The collection is called "noisy" because the coins make a clanging sound as they are placed in the offering bucket.
This collection was from January through November.  This month, the Sunday School children will be asked what animals to purchase based on your total donations.  A variety of animals helps provide ample nutrition and a sustainable source of income for many families.  We will let you know in January what the children chose.
For January - October, God’s Global Barnyard “noisy coin collection” has received a total of $499.50.
In Christ, Sharon Hood & Debbie Hollenbach, Co-Chairs

Update on our October Social Ministry Project:
In October, the Social Ministry Team was collecting boxed Muffin or Bread Mixes.  Thank you so much for your generous donations of 30 boxes of muffin and bread mixes along with 20 boxes of potatoes.  They were delivered and very much appreciated by the Food Cupboard in Hatfield.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.  Matthew 6:33-34 (NKJV)

The “Golden Girls of Faith” (Golden Men are welcome too!)  will be meeting once a month for lunch, fellowship and prayer at a local restaurant.  They will meet the first Wednesday of the month which will be December 3, 2025, this month.
