February 2026 Mustard Seed - A Word from Our Pastor

1/29/2026

Greetings Siblings in Christ,

God’s peace and blessing to you all. I pray that you all are well, and staying warm this winter season. As I write this newsletter, we are nearing the end of January, and we are between the busy seasons of Christmas and Lent. The Church calendar labels this period as ordinary time. However, many Christians associate this time with Epiphany, often using language like ”time/Sunday after Epiphany.” Overall, this time of the year is slower, minus the preparation that goes into the planning of our congregation's annual meeting. Nevertheless, this slowness and the preparation for the annual meeting lends well to leaving time and space for reflection. Thus, I have been thinking a lot about the Church, our congregations, and the world. The other day I was listening to and singing hymns, and there was one particular hymn that spoke to me. This hymn was the song All Are Welcome (ELW 641), which was written and compassed by the famous Lutheran composer, Marty Haugen. The first verse of the All Are Welcome goes like this:

Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

Refrain: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

This is the verse of the hymn that particularly spoke to me. In this day and age, it often feels like we live in a world that seems to be so divided. However, this hymn speaks of a place where divisions end, a place where we “build a house where love can dwell.” Thus, the question is how does one build this house? The hymn says the house is “built of hope, and dreams, and visions.” However, how do these things come about?

Well, on February 18th, we begin the season of Lent, and this season serves as a time of prayer, reflection, and repentance. This year our theme for Lent is “Dwelling”. Thus, over the 40 days of Lent, together we will contemplate what it means to dwell: to dwell in God, to dwell in each other, and to dwell in the world. In a world that is so often divided, it is important for us to learn how to dwell. To dwell, is to be fully present. It is to learn how to abide and to fully listen. It is to be attentive to whom or to what is in front of us. Furthermore, dwelling is not a short-term affair, but to dwell is to live or remain somewhere or with someone for a period of time. Thus, to dwell is a commitment to sit, listen, and remain with God and with each other. When we do this, we are led into hope, and we come to learn about the dreams and visions that God has in store for us.  So, together we will learn what it means for us to dwell. We will discuss this in worship. However, there will also be a weekly Bible study where we will reflect on scripture by using the prayer practice called “Dwelling on the Word.” More information about that can be found on a different page.

During these 40 days, I pray that we may come to fully understand how to dwell. However, since we are entering into Lent, we are reminded that as human beings we often sin, and  fail to truly dwell with God and with each other. Thus, in this time of Lent, we are called to repent, and as we do so we are reminded that we have a God who dwells with us through Jesus Christ, who is God’s word! In Colossians 3:16, the Apostle Paul say “16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.” Thus, as we go into this season of Lent, into this time reflection, let us do so knowing that Christ dwells in us, and through him we will learn how to “build a house where love can dwell.” And so, thanks be to God, in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Peace and Blessings, Pastor Ethan Doan

February 2026 Mustard Seed - Announcements

1/29/2026

Dwelling in the Word Lenten Bible Study
Dwelling in the Word is a 30 minute process for becoming aware of God’s presence and the Spirit’s movement by listening and reflecting on Scripture as a gathered community. Dwelling in the Word forms faith and trust within a group by sharing responses to three questions: what do I notice, what do I wonder, and where might God’s Spirit be nudging us?
The word “dwell” or “abide” is used frequently in Scripture, meaning to live or remain somewhere or with someone for a time. The practice of Dwelling in the Word invites communities to live together with a text for a period so that the reflections, wonderings, and promptings of God’s Word form and shape our faith and living. The purpose of Dwelling in the Word is not about answering questions or getting to particular results but rather allowing ourselves to be present with God’s living Word (Central/Southern Illinois Synod).
This Lent at Faith Lutheran and Jerusalem Lutheran, Pastor Ethan invites all who are interested to participate with him in “Dwelling in the Word.”  Each week, Pastor Ethan and those who would like to participate will dwell In the lectionary texts for the following Sunday. This will start on the first full week of Lent. On Wednesdays (excluding Holy Week), Pastor Ethan will be leading sessions at 11:00 am at Jerusalem. Then, on Thursdays (excluding Holy Week) at 11:00am at Faith. See specific dates below:
     At Jerusalem (11:00 am); 2/25, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25
    At Faith (11:00am); 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

The Listening Life: Embracing Attentiveness in a World of Distraction   by Adam S McHugh
"Be quick to listen, slow to speak." —James 1:19
“How would our lives change if we approached every experience with the intention of listening first?
Adam McHugh places listening at the heart of our spirituality, our relationships and our mission in the world. God himself is the God who hears, and we too can learn to hear what God may be saying through creation, through Scripture, through people. By cultivating a posture of listening, we become more attentive and engaged with those around us. Listening shapes us and equips us to be more attuned to people in pain and more able to minister to those in distress.
Our lives are qualitatively different—indeed, better—when we become listeners. Heed the call to the listening life and hear what God is doing in you and the world.”
Throughout the year, our congregations will be meeting monthly to discuss the book.  Each month there will be two different sessions for one to pick from.
    The sessions made available for February will be;
  • February 4, 2026; in person/zoom at Faith Lutheran in adult education room; 6:00pm
  • February 8, 2026: in person at Jerusalem Lutheran, after worship at 12:30pm

 Do you shop at Giant?
If you do, you can buy Giant gift cards from the church.  A $50 card costs you $50.  How does the church make money?  Well, when Faith purchases $1,000 worth of cards from Giant, they only charge us $950 (a 5% discount.)  So, when we sell those cards to you, the church makes $50.  It adds up…

Please keep the stamps coming!
It’s a continuing need!  Thank you for all your contributions.  It really helps!

Hatfield Flowers and Gifts (215) 822-1530) provides Faith with two lovely flower arrangements to adorn our sanctuary each Sunday.
You can sign up to sponsor flowers, bulletins or a food basket.  The flowers are $35, the bulletins are $10 and the food basket is $25.
You can dedicate any one of these things to someone special, to celebrate a birthday or in memory of a loved one. You may take the flowers home or they will be given to an ill or homebound member.  The $10 for the bulletins is to help cover the cost of making the bulletins and the $25 for the food basket is money donated to “Manna on Main Street” to help feed those in the North Penn area.
To sign up for a particular Sunday either sign up on the chart on the Foyer bulletin board or call Janet in the church office (215) 368-0240.

February 2026 Mustard Seed - Council Notes

1/29/2026

Council Notes                                                                                                                                                January 7, 2026

Council was called to order by President Rich Hollenbach.    Minutes of the December regular council meeting were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report: Highlights of the December Treasurer’s report: The final treasurer's report of 2025 shows that Pledged Member Giving is at 94% but Unpledged Member Giving is increased at 170% and Loose Plate Offering at 19%.
This leaves us with a year-end budget deficit of $31,670.15.  It is lower than we projected but it still shows that we cannot finance our congregation’s needs without utilizing our reserve funds.
Special Envelopes for Christmas, the Christmas Cookie Can Sale and utilizing the remaining funds from the Merck stock/HVAC Fund allowed us to end the month of December with only a $626.90 deficit.
Overall, most expenses in the projected budget were pretty accurate.  Fixed expenses were higher than anticipated, however, due to congregational donations, hospitality expenses were much lower than budgeted.
Our current Mortgage balance is $140,753.63.
The treasurer’s report from December 2025 was approved as written.

President’s Report: As reviewed above, our reserves are increasingly being used up to handle our expenses and operating costs of our church with 2025 using almost $32,000. This is the first time we have ended the year with over $30,000 in deficit.
This is my final council meeting that I will be running as my term expires this month. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve Faith these past 6 years.

Pastor’s Report: I have led and presided at worship regularly throughout the month at Faith and Jerusalem.
I continue to do shifts at the Lansdale Hospital as the Volunteer Protestant Chaplain and volunteer at Mitzvah Circle.
Our theme this program year is “A Listening Faith.” Our Book study offerings were paused for the month of December. The next offerings are on January 7, 2026, on zoom/ in person at Faith at 6pm, and at Jerusalem on January 11, 2026, at 12:30pm. Study has been going well. There were some great conversations.
Our last Faith Education Dinner was on December 14th at 5:30pm. Next session will be January 11, 2025.
In conversation with Debbie Hollenbach, we talked with Pastor Gwendolyn King and Faith has signed up to host two Feast Incarnate meals. One on May 19 or 26, and on September 15, 2026.
Thank you for your cards and gifts that my family and I received for Christmas. You all did not have to do that, but it was appreciated. You make us feel very loved.

 Ministry Team Reports:
Christian Education: Sunday School – Children ages 3 to 11 are welcome to attend Sunday school.  (Children leave during Worship service with the Sunday school teacher after children’s sermon and return for communion).  It is very convenient for the parent/caregiver to attend worship service while their children attend Sunday school.  Our rotation of teachers will be Kate Waldman, Anna Friedrich, and Gail Achilles until Nancy Gansner returns at the end of March 2026.
Young Adult Fellowship (ages 12 to 17) – Since this ministry did not get together in December 2025, our YAF group will enjoy a Christmas party plus ring in the New Year on Sunday, January 18, 6 pm to 7:30 pm.  Our next YAF is planned for February 15.
Parents’ Night Out – Youth Fellowship (PNO-YF) Our monthly event is scheduled for Friday, January 16, 6 pm to 9 pm in the church fellowship hall.  Our theme will be taking care of God’s animals.  Our next event will be held on February 13, at the same time and place.  (Please note that the March 20th date for PNO-YF as printed on first batch of informational flyers has been changed to March 27th).
Monday Night Bible Study (MNBS): Happy Blessed New Year!  Our bible study group met on January 5 and chose “Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven” by Dr. Ann-Jill Levine to be our next study.  We meet by zoom on Monday evenings, 7 pm – 9 pm.  The zoom link can be found in the “Mustard Seed” and the church service weekly bulletin.  All are welcome.
