April 2026 Mustard Seed - A Word from Our Pastor

4/8/2026

Greetings Siblings in Christ,

As we enter the month of April, Easter Sunday draws near, and our 40 day Lenten journey will soon come to a close. On March 29, Palm Sunday begins our journey into Holy Week. A journey that begins with Jesus making his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, which ultimately will lead to his death on the cross on Good Friday. However, as most of us know, this is not the end of the story. On Easter Sunday, Christ is risen from the dead, and God’s glory is revealed to all the world.
As Christians, Easter Sunday is our most holy and important day of the year. It is the very foundation of the Church and the basis of our Christian faith. As Christians, we fight about a lot of things. However, we all can agree that Jesus died and was resurrected. Thus, Easter Sunday is indeed a day for us to celebrate and to remember! It is a day for us to observe together and be in worship together! It is a day that will never be forgotten. However, though it is a day that will never be forgotten, it is a day that is often misplaced. It is a day that we often have to look for because we often forget when it is happening. You see, Easter Sunday is not on a fixed day of the year. Since the fourth century, the traditional date of Easter for most Christians has fallen on the first Sunday after the first full moon that comes after the spring equinox. Thus, Easter Sunday can fall on any date from March 22nd to April 25th in any given year.
So, that sounds simple enough? Look for a full moon after the spring equinox then the next Sunday is Easter? Well, it is a little more complicated than that. In theory the statement above is true, but it has to follow ecclesiastical rules. The ecclesiastical rules are:
  • The vernal equinox occurs on March 21,
  • the ecclesiastical full moon is the 14th day of a tabular lunation (a fixed, pre calculated moment of a lunar cycle in a lunar calendar), and
  • Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the day of the vernal equinox.
Thus, a more accurate statement would be that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that comes after the vernal spring equinox. So, it is a little more complicated than one may think. The Council of Nicea (325 AD), the same council that gave us the earliest version of the Nicene creed, set this to be the criteria in calculating the date of Easter Sunday. However, the calculation of Easter Sunday was further refined with the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. The Gregorian calendar replaced the older Julian Calendar. Thus, this is the reason why the Eastern/Orthodox Church sometimes celebrates Easter on a different Sunday than the Western Church. The Eastern Church follows the Julian Calendar and the Western Church the Gregorian Calendar.
Nevertheless, my point in telling you all this is to show you all how complicated the calculation of Easter Sunday is. Thus, it is not a surprise that when we get to this time of the year that many people have to turn to the internet or to their calendars to confirm the date of Easter Sunday. However, I wonder how one would know that Easter Sunday was coming if we did not have the internet or calendar. I think back to hundreds of years ago when perhaps the common people did not have access to a calendar or maybe could not read a calendar. How would they know that Easter was coming? Well, hopefully their priest/pastor would make sure they knew. However, nevertheless they would have to be intentional in trying to find out the correct date for Easter. They would have to pay attention. Perhaps, they would need to listen. Perhaps, when they heard those shouts of “hosanna,” when they heard the cries yelling  “crucify him,” when they heard the hallelujahs, perhaps then they would know that it was Easter. Thus, perhaps we do not need to fully understand when Easter is. I’m sure there are a few people who know the formula and they have no problem predicting Easter. However, there is something life-giving about having to guess each year when Easter comes. Perhaps it is a call in itself for us to stop and pay attention to what is happening in front of us. Maybe it is a call for us also to listen for the hosannas and the hallelujahs, and when we hear them we can know that Christ is at work in the world. We can know that Easter is near! That salvation and new life is right around the corner. And so, this year I invite you all to stop and listen, for Easter is indeed coming. Let us listen and follow the shouts. Let them lead us to the cross. Let them lead us to the empty tomb. Let them lead us to Jesus. Amen.

Peace and Blessings, Pastor Ethan Doan

April 2026 Mustard Seed - Council Notes

4/8/2026

Council Minutes                                                                                                                                            March 4, 2026
Council was called to order by President Anne Hutnyk.
Council Minutes from the February 4 regular council meeting was approved as written.
Treasurer’s Report: We had a good month, which helped to make up for the shortfall in January, keeping in mind that a lot of what we received in February would have been received in January had it not been for the snow days.  We're still showing a net deficit for the year of $5,833.  We're 16% through the year and income is at 20% ($23,322.93) of the budgeted amounts and expenses are at 18% ($29,155.99). So while we're operating with a deficit, it is close to what we predicted when we approved the budget.  The treasurer’s report was approved as written.
President’s Report: From Anne Hutnyk. Thank you for believing in me by voting for me. Praying I can fill the big shoes left for me. Family always works together and I am truly blessed to have you guys as family. Let’s keep this church going!
Pastor’s Report: I have led and presided at worship regularly throughout the month of February at Faith and Jerusalem.  I continue to provide pastoral care, information, and help to those seeking aid.  We give thanks and praise for the life of Verna Wilde. A funeral service was held at Faith on February 9 and at St. James Pitman on February 12. Thank you for coming out in celebration of Verna!  Ash Wednesday: In the morning, I provided ashes for the staff and patients at Jefferson Lansdale Hospital. From 12pm-2pm, I did a walk in ashes and prayer at Jerusalem. Then from 2:30pm-4pm, I did a walk in ashes and prayer at Faith. There was a full Ash Wednesday service at 7pm at Faith. Have been in discussion and have given tours to the members of Iglesia Pentecostal Nueva Jerusalén La Celestial of Lansdale, who are looking to possibly use our space for worship.  I continue to do shifts at the Lansdale Hospital as the Volunteer Protestant Chaplain and volunteer at Mitzvah Circle.  Our last Faith Education Dinner was on February 8.  Our theme for Lent 2026 will be “Dwelling.”  This is in conjunction with our yearlong theme, “A Listening Faith.” We explore together what it means to dwell with God, with each other, and with all of God’s creation.  See Important Dates for details.  Continued Learning – clergy text study on Tuesdays; first call theological meetings; monthly clergy coaching in support of Nourishing Vocation Project; SEPA Synod peer group.

 MINISTRY TEAM REPORTS:
Christian Education:
Sunday School - Children ages 3 to 11 are welcome to attend Sunday school.  (Children leave during Worship service with the Sunday school teacher after children’s sermon and return for communion.
Parent Night Out/Youth Fellowship (PNO/YF) – Our monthly event is scheduled for March 27, 6 pm to 9 pm in the church fellowship hall.  Our theme is “Holy Week/Easter”.  April event is scheduled for April 17.
Young Adult Fellowship (ages 12-17) - Because our last three meetings were cancelled due to weather conditions, the group will enjoy a Christmas, Welcoming the New Year, Valentine’s, Easter theme including devotion/discussion, and fun and fellowship with their peers and the adult support team. Our next YAF is scheduled for April 19.
MNBS- Our current study begins on March 9 for 4 weeks based on “The Promise and Power of Easter” by Christine Caine and Lisa Harper.
Faith Education: The March meeting will be on Sunday, the 8th.  The time is 5:30–7pm.
Finance: On February 12, members of the Finance Ministry Team and Pastor Ethan met via Zoom with Guenter Wesch to review his findings on the External Financial Review. He discussed his findings and recommendations. He did not find any inconsistencies or problems with our financial reports. Mainly he recommended that we produce a 1099 tax form for the monies that we paid Pat Keen, our organist. He recommended to shorten the form that we share with Council monthly and moved a couple of lines around a bit to make things easier or cleaner. He stated that he would not recommend an External Review on a routine basis, as it is not necessary, in his opinion. The Financial Team plans to review the recommendations and will schedule a meeting in April to go over both the 2024 Internal Financial Review and the 2025 External Financial review and determine what changes will be made to our processes.
Hospitality: February 15 – Fastnacht Sunday – ordered 3 dozen donuts with no leftovers; March 8 – Celebrating Pat’s (organist) birthday (Janet getting cake); March 20 is the scrapbooking flea market so the kitchen will be open that day. I will be working in the kitchen, and any volunteers would be greatly appreciated;  March 29 – Palm Sunday/Church’s 61st anniversary (sign-up will be available shortly).
Long-Range Planning: We are still in the process of reaching out to members to have conversations.  We will be meeting again soon.
Property Management: see New Business..
Property: Another car was left in our parking lot but has already been taken care of.
Shepherding: Sharon Hood will lead the group again with Beth Schoening is recovering.
Social Ministry: For 2026, 141 Impact “noisy coin collection” will continue again this year. During January (and early February due to the snow!) we collected individual packets of tissues and bags of candy for the residents of Paradise Manor in Hatfield. Everyone signed a Valentine’s Day Card for each of the current residents. The day before Valentine’s Day, Debbie Hollenbach dropped everything off at Paradise Manor. The administration was excited about the donations and planned to set everything out for the residents on Valentine’s Day! Altogether we signed 22 individual cards for the residents, collected 10 cube boxes and 145 individual packets of tissues (very much appreciated during this season of the year!) and 13 bags or boxes of candy. Thank you for everyone who participated to help the residents of Paradise Manor and to making them feel loved!

OLD BUSINESS
Constitution Update: Rich Hollenbach will continue to work on this.

 NEW BUSINESS
Discussion on possible rental of our facilities to Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Nueva Jerusalén La Celestial (New Jerusalem Heavenly Pentecostal Church of God) of Lansdale.  Background information: Faith received a letter from this church, inquiring about the possibility of renting our facilities for their church.  They are currently leasing space in Lansdale, but their congregation is outgrowing the space. Their Pastor and a few church members came to Faith where Pastor Ethan gave them a tour.  It was agreed that they would attend the council meeting for more discussion.  Prior to their arrival, Council discussed questions and concerns we had.  After their arrival, there was an open exchange amongst all with questions and concerns being openly discussed.  Some of these topics included schedule of usage, their storage requirements, their flexibility if Faith needs the space during their scheduled time, terms of the rental agreement, insurance, child clearances, facility maintenance, references, etc.  After their departure, council agreed that we should continue down this path with due diligence.
The Council voted to move forward with the rental agreement between the Pentecostal church and Faith on the following terms:
1) Initial rental agreement would be for four months at $1500/month, payable by check on the first of the month.  Final rental agreement to be reviewed and accepted by both parties.  2) In the event that additional costs are incurred (utilities, insurance, maintenance, etc.) Pentecostal will assist in covering these costs.  3) The Pentecostal church provides a reference letter from their current location and insurance policy.  4) Faith has discussions with Janet and Adam (additions to their responsibilities, storage space,) confer with our insurance company, find out actual tax ramifications, Korean church timing.

Next Meeting:  Wednesday, April 1st at 7pm.

Post Council Meeting Updates:
Pastor Ethan spoke with Pastor Melvin on March 8 to give him the go-ahead to continue with their preparations and tasks (i.e. reference letter, insurance, rental terms, etc.).

New Ministry Partner

Greeting Siblings in Christ,
I am excited to announce that Faith Lutheran Church is officially entering into a partnership with Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Nueva Jerusalén La Celestial of Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Several weeks ago, Nueva Jerusalén reached out to Faith after having read on Faith’s website that we let outside groups use our space.  In conversation, they informed Faith that they were “currently praying and searching for a larger worship space in the area.” The following week, six representatives of their congregation came to Faith and toured our space. After having seen our space, Nueva Jerusalén thought that Faith’s space was perfect for their growing congregation. Over the next several weeks, Nueva Jerusalén and Faith’s Congregation Council discussed in detail what Nueva Jerusalén was looking for and whether Faith would be a good fit. Four representatives of Nueva Jerusalén then attended Faith's monthly council meeting on March 4, 2026. There both parties were able to address any questions that one had. After the representatives of Nueva Jerusalén left the meeting, Faith’s Council had a greater conversation and voted unanimously in favor of allowing Nueva Jerusalén to use our space. Over the next week, Faith’s Executive Council worked with the leadership of Nueva Jerusalén in constructing a building use agreement. This agreement was then approved by the Executive Council and signed by both parties. Nueva Jerusalén will be moving things into Faith on March 28, 2026 and the following day will be their first service. One of the reasons why I am making an official announcement of this is because Nueva Jerusalén is asking for a significant amount of time and space. Nueva Jerusalén will be somewhere in our building for at least 4 of 7 days of the week in the evenings. Below you can find a more detailed schedule. This will be a big change for Faith. We will have to be more intentional about our schedule. There will be a lot more people coming in and out of our building. We will have to be more intentional about not leaving stuff out if someone is using the space the next day. They will be using the sanctuary, the Sunday School rooms, the fellowship hall, and adult forum room. So, this will be an adjustment for us.  However, Faith’s Council believes that we have made this decision in our best interest. Our decision to allow Nueva Jerusalén to use our space was mostly a financial one. However, we are excited for what future partnerships this agreement may bring. We also recognize how energizing and Spirit filled this agreement may be for Faith. This agreement also aligns with Faith’s own mission and our slogan “where the name of Jesus is spoken! If we are able in this way to further speak Jesus’ name, then we are furthering Christ’s mission here on earth. Thus, I look forward to the future and what this agreement may bring. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the council or directly to me. I would be happy to answer any questions. Below you can find a brief description of Nueva Jerusalén and their proposed weekly schedule.

Peace and Blessings, Pastor Ethan Doan

Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Nueva Jerusalén La Celestial has been serving and growing in the Lansdale region for the last 3 years. Their mission is rooted in Mark 16:15: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel.” Over the last 3 years, Nueva Jerusalén has been led by  Pastor Melvin Villanueva, who faithfully answered the call to preach the Gospel here in Pennsylvania, traveling about three hours one way from Maryland to shepherd and serve the congregation. Nueva Jerusalén has three sister congregations in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Norristown. Nueva Jerusalén is a growing congregation that worships 50-70 people during weekend services and 30 people at weekday evening services. They are very excited for this new partnership with Faith and they hope to develop a closer relationship with the members of Faith as they settle in.

Lord, when did we see you...?
The purpose of the Social Ministry Team is to follow Jesus' commandment to love one another as he loved us.  To offer opportunities to our congregation to be good and faithful servants.  To share the love and truth of Jesus Christ and to offer hope to all God's children by giving of our time, our money and ourselves to our church, our community, and the world.

Social Ministry Project for April/May 2026:
There are two exciting Social Ministry projects coming up in April and May. First is a two-month collection of funds in support of the Philadelphia Region Ronald McDonald House Charities. The Ronald McDonald House Charities support the families of people who have children in the hospital for a variety of medical issues including pre-term growth, illness, surgery, and cancer. They provide housing, food, transportation to the families, as well as emotional support, social and creative opportunities, tutoring and so much more!
Debbie Hollenbach became more aware of this organization in September when her granddaughter Nadia was born 3 months premature at Medical City in Dallas, TX. Her parents, Ricky and Bethany stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas for over 100 days – having a private room, meals, access to laundry facilities and other amenities, all at NO CHARGE to themselves! This allowed them to spend unlimited time at the hospital, caring for Nadia and even working remotely. Sharon Hood has shared that she has also supported this organization for over 20 years.
Funds are raised in a variety of ways, but people can pledge to provide financial support to families in the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald Houses/ Living Rooms at $25/night. Let us see how many nights Faith Lutheran Church can provide support to a family! Look for a poster and collection can in the Foyer for the months of April and May.

The second project is the Feast Incarnate dinner at University Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. We participated in this outreach in May 2025, and the people involved were really moved by the experience. We committed to prepare and serve two meals in 2026. We will serve the same menu each time – Mini Meatloaves, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and honey walnut cake. The dates are May 27 and September 15. Watch for the poster containing food items to donate as well as asking for volunteers to make the meatloaves and to help to serve the meal in Philadelphia.

16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.  (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT)
