Council Minutes of the January regular council meeting were approved as written.
Treasurer’s Report: Highlights of the January Treasurer’s report: At 8% of the year, our receipts are about 5% and our expenses are around 10%. Pledged Member Giving is at 5% and Un-pledged Member Giving is at 2%. Expenses for January were at $15,344.14 leaving us with a deficit of $10,112.99 already!
Due to the weather, we only had 2 worship services in the building. We also had 2 large snowfalls and thus we have spent 63% of our Snow Removal Budget plus several annual bills are paid in January. We should make up some of this in February. The Treasurer’s Report was approved as written.
Council Elections: Council elected by majority vote the President, Vice-President, and Secretary for our 2026 council. We welcomed our newest member Bonnie Staller and welcomed back John Taylor to our 2026 council. The Chairs/Liaisons were updated for 2026. (See attached).
President’s Report: Rich Hollenbach reported via Gary Apgar. It was a good, albeit long Annual meeting on Sunday with a good discussion and we have our new council and an approved budget for 2026. I wish good luck to the new council.
Pastor’s Report: I have led and presided at worship regularly throughout the month at Faith and Jerusalem. I continue to do shifts at the Lansdale Hospital as the Volunteer Protestant Chaplain and volunteer at Mitzvah Circle. We give thanks and praise for our beloved sister in Christ, Verna Wilde. A memorial service for Verna will be held on Monday, February 9, 11 am visitation and 12 pm service.
Our theme this program year is “A Listening Faith.” Our Book study offerings were paused for the month of December. Our sessions will be February 4, 2026, on zoom / in-person at Faith at 6pm, and at Jerusalem on February 8, 2026, at 12:30pm. Our last Faith Education Dinner was on January 11, 2026, at 2:30pm. Next session will be February 8, 2025, at 2:30pm. Our theme for Lent 2026 will be “Dwelling.” This is in conjunction with our yearlong theme, “A Listening Faith.” We explore together what it means to dwell with God, with each other, and with all of God’s creation. I invite all who are interested to participate with me in “Dwelling in the Word.” Each week, I and those who would like to participate will dwell in the lectionary texts for the following Sunday. This will start on the first full week of Lent. On Wednesdays (excluding Holy Week), I will be leading sessions at 11:00 am at Jerusalem. Then, on Thursdays (excluding Holy Week) at 11:00am at Faith. This past month, Luca was diagnosed with a peanut allergy, so, please be careful what you give him.

61st Annual Congregational Meeting Minutes
Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Montgomeryville, PA
February 1, 2026
Call to order: President Rich Hollenbach called the meeting to order at 11:00 am. There were 32 confirmed members present which qualified the meeting as the required quorum of 25 was met and thus proceeded with the meeting. Rich noted that the annual congregational meeting was postponed from the original date of January 25 to today, February 1, due to wintry weather conditions.
Opening Prayer: Pastor Ethan Doan led the opening prayer.
President Rich Hollenbach reviewed the meeting rules, explaining that anyone wishing to speak should raise a hand and wait to be recognized, and that all voting would be conducted by a show of hands. He also clarified that while anyone with an interest in Faith is welcome to participate in the discussion, voting is limited to confirmed members who have made a recorded financial contribution and have communed within the past two years, as well as to new members who are also eligible to vote.
Minutes of the 60th Annual Congregational Meeting held on January 26, 2025: Having no changes, all voted in favor to approve the minutes of last year’s meeting.
President’s Remarks/Report:
Rich referred the congregation to his written report in the packet and then shared personal reflections on his time at Faith Lutheran Church. He expressed deep gratitude for the past 27 years, noting that from the moment he and his wife, Debbie, first walked through the doors, they were welcomed like family. He spoke humbly of what an honor and pleasure it has been to serve as Council President and to know, partner with, and share in fellowship with the Faith Lutheran community. Looking ahead, Rich explained that as he continues his seminary education, he anticipates being called to serve another congregation. Because of his future absence, he emphasized the growing need for technical support during Sunday worship and offered to train others on the sound and video systems. Finally, Rich underscored the seriousness of the congregation’s financial situation, explaining that last year’s deficit of over $30,000 places the church on a path toward running out of funds. He urged the congregation to face this reality honestly and consider possible options, including sharing space with another congregation, selling the building and worshiping elsewhere, or choosing to take no action and eventually move on when resources are exhausted.
Pastor’s Remarks/Report:
Pastor Ethan encouraged the congregation to read his Pastor’s Report included in the packet and then shared reflections on his ministry among them. He expressed how happy he has been to lead the congregation and affirmed that, although Faith Lutheran is a small community of believers, it carries out significant and meaningful outreach. He highlighted ministries such as providing meals for the homebound, the homeless, and those in need through Feast Incarnate last May, as well as support for homebound members of the congregation and other ministries that offer services and needed items to others. He noted that additional meals at Feast Incarnate are planned for May and September 2026, with several congregation members affirming how fun and rewarding that experience was. Pastor Ethan also reminded the congregation of its support for two international Compassion children, Bunga and Joao, and shared his encouragement that the church will continue to be faithful evangelists and stewards to one another and to those
beyond Faith Lutheran Church. Finally, he emphasized the need for prayer and decisive action regarding the options before the congregation concerning its future, noting that he would address these matters further during the long-range planning portion of the meeting.
Nominating Team Report and Congregation Council Elections:
The Nominating Team was led by Melissa Prunkel, with Janet Hill and Bonnie Staller also serving on the team. Rich noted with a smile that he was not eligible to run for council again, having already served two three-year terms and, according to the constitution, is required to take at least one year off before becoming eligible. Melissa presented two candidates for three-year terms: John Taylor and Bonnie Staller, and explained that although there were three open positions, only two nominees were brought forward. When a question arose from the congregation regarding the number of council members required, Rich clarified that the council may consist of six to nine members and that electing the two nominees would bring the total to eight, which is within the acceptable range. Rich then called for nominations from the floor, noting that any nominee must be present to accept the nomination; with no additional nominations offered, he called for the election to proceed. The congregation voted unanimously to approve the motion and welcome Bonnie Staller and John Taylor for new three-year terms on the council.
Election of the Nominating Team for 2026:
Rich explained that as the only retiring member of the council, he is automatically appointed to serve as chair of the nominating team for next year, and that two additional members were needed to complete the team. Sheena Navarro and Anne Hutnyk volunteered to serve. The congregation voted unanimously in favor of the newly formed nominating team.
Ministry Team and Organization Reports: A round of applause was given to all those who serve on the teams, and the floor was opened for anyone who wanted to provide additional information on their teams.
Christian Education – Gail Achilles praised Jesus for all the awesome volunteers/participants, the children who attend and their parents for furthering their connection with God in Sunday school, Parent Night Out-Youth Fellowship, Young Adult Fellowship, Monday Night Bible Study group, Vacation Bible School, and Faith Education. These groups may be small, but they are thriving through the power of the Holy Spirit and faith in Jesus. Gail pointed out the need for outreach to the community to help these ministries grow. She centered particularly on recruiting more volunteers for Parent Night Out, children ages 3 to 11, which will be needed if our plan to reach the community is successful and more kids attend. Gail pressed the importance of bringing more families to Jesus as God has called us to be his disciples. All our ministries are for the glory of God.
Communications – Pastor Ethan spoke about communications. Janet Hill and Pastor update the website about current and upcoming events and other information happening at Faith Lutheran Church. Pastor thanked John Taylor for updating the front lawn sign in a timely manner. Pastor Ethan also added that Sheena Navarro may join the team to help with social media updates.
Evangelism – Pastor Ethan noted that we evangelize to our two Compassion International children, Bunga from Indonesia and Joao from Brazil.
Fundraising – Debbie Hollenbach informed us that Scrapbooking has been a big plus to raise money. There are a few scrapbooking events scheduled for 2026 at Faith Lutheran Church. A Scrapbooking Yard Sale is planned for Friday, March 20, 9 am to 6 pm. Anne Hutnyk will oversee the kitchen and serve food. This event will need volunteers; more details will follow. Your participation is greatly appreciated. Also, there will be a donation at the door, and these proceeds will go the “Feast Incarnate” needs.
Hospitality – Anne Hutnyk thanked the congregation members for contributing food and other items for coffee hour. She noted that she will provide plain coffee creamers, but anyone who prefers flavored creamers is welcome to bring those in themselves.
Long-Range Planning – Pastor Ethan, Missy Prunkel, Debbie Hollenbach, and Adam Feldman are on this team. Pastor Ethan explained that the current focus is on three key areas: becoming better listeners, engaging in honest conversation about the future of the church, and addressing the question of whether the congregation should place its primary emphasis on Christian education and evangelism as a means of growth. He also suggested that, given the urgency surrounding Faith’s future, it may be necessary to shift from a long-range planning approach to an action-oriented planning team that can respond more directly to short-term needs.
Mutual Ministry – The to-be elected council Vice President for 2026 will reach out to members of the congregation to form this team. It will need two more members.
Special Funds Team – The Council President once elected for 2026 will be the Chair of Special Funds Team and will need a new member at large from the congregation.
Property – Property chair, Adam Feldman reported that all is good.
Shepherding/Social Ministry – Debbie Hollenbach reported Valentine’s Cards were signed by members of the congregation to be taken to Paradise Manor in Hatfield along with tissue packs and candies. Debbie informed everyone that our Monday night small group has had many interesting studies growing our relationship with Jesus. She told everyone how nice it has been since Covid that we started meeting on zoom for bible study alleviating driving in bad weather and at night and staying in the warmth of our homes. She asked everyone to think about joining. She also informed us that the “Noisy Can Coin Collection” will be going to support 141 Impact; meals will be taken to Feast Incarnate twice this year, May and September, and that we also support the Food Cupboard in Hatfield.
Stewardship – Pastor Ethan is hopeful to expand this ministry in the near future.
Transportation – Rich stated anyone in need of transportation should contact the church office.
Worship and Music – Rich explained that for 2026, the budget only allows for Pat to be paid for 35 services at her current rate. As a result, Pat will play on the first and third Sundays of each month, as well as for special services and festivals. He also noted that today’s service marked the first time in years that the congregation used ELW Communion Setting 10. Finally, Rich reminded the congregation of the need for volunteers to assist with audio and video technology, especially in light of his upcoming move to another church as he continues his seminary education.
Finance Team: Treasurer’s Report for 2025/2026 Budget Report – Debbie Hollenbach, chair of Finance, presented the financial report, noting that total expenses for 2025 reached $160,014.27, significantly increasing the congregation’s deficit. She explained that this was the largest deficit to date and that the shortfall was covered directly from savings. Pledged giving was lower than budgeted, in part due to the deaths of congregation members. The budget anticipates a deficit of $44,000 for the current year, which will further reduce reserves. Debbie shared that the Finance Team worked to reduce spending across several ministries while intentionally allocating more funds to Christian Education in an effort to strengthen youth ministries. She reviewed a chart showing our reserves of $270,742 in 2024, $238,678 in 2025, and a projection of dropping below $200,000 this year, while the congregation continues to carry a $140,000 mortgage. Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, Debbie, along with Pastor Ethan, invited the congregation to consider difficult but necessary questions about the church’s future, including whether to close and move on in a “death and resurrection” model, to partner with another congregation, or to explore using the property to generate income. Debbie added that the addition of ten new families could significantly improve the church’s viability. She also responded to questions from Mark Murset regarding available funds, clarifying that endowment funds may be used for operating expenses, while designated funds may not. Opening the floor for discussion, Mark Murset shared an example from a struggling company that ultimately chose to close, quoting the Rush lyric, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice,” to stress the urgency of decision-making. He expressed opposition to the “death and resurrection” option, arguing that it would not be faithful stewardship of the legacy built by past members. Pastor Ethan and Rich responded by clarifying that such an approach could involve selling the building to a nonprofit or other mission-driven entity and using the proceeds to move forward in a way that honors the congregation’s legacy. Debbie concluded by proposing that the congregation approve the budget while directing the long-range planning team to continue working on strategies to reduce spending.
President Rich Hollenbach called for a motion to accept the budget –All voted in favor of the 2026 budget.
Recognition of Retiring Council Members: The congregation applauded enthusiastically for Rich Hollenbach, who is retiring from council and has served as our Council President for four of his six years on council. Rich did a fantastic job as President, and he will be greatly missed.
Old Business - Faith Constitution – Rich explained that the document requires a few revisions based on feedback from the council’s review, as well as updates reflecting recommendations from the ELCA Churchwide Assembly, before it is shared with the congregation for review. He also noted that guidance is being sought from the SEPA Synod regarding the proper review and approval process. Pastor Ethan indicated that he would meet with Rich to share additional updates. Rich further pointed out that the revised constitution includes provisions for virtual attendance and voting via Zoom for meetings.
New Business
Genevieve Prunkel shared her interest in joining the council; however, it was noted that her father was already serving, and that it is generally considered best practice not to have two members from the same family or household on the council at the same time. Adam Feldman observed that he had not seen any provision in the current constitution that prohibits related or married individuals from serving concurrently. Rich responded by noting that this issue is addressed in the revised constitution.
Adjournment
Having no further new business, President Rich Hollenbach called for a motion to adjourn the meeting. All agreed and the meeting was adjourned at 12:25pm.
